HAMARI PAHCHAN:- CONFRONTING IMBALANCED NUTRITION

Nutrition is the process by which an organism uses food to support its life. Nutrients acquired from foods and fluids are used for the body’s cellular metabolism. Optimal nutrition means having adequate vitamins and nutrients to support the body’s processes. Imbalanced nutrition refers to either nutrition that is more than or less than the body’s requirements and metabolic needs. It can occur with any individual.

Malnutrition occurs due to inadequate, excessive, or imbalanced nutritional intake. This includes being underweight or overweight, or lacking specific nutrients.

MALNUTRITION IN INDIA:- Malnutrition has adverse effects on the body’s growth or form, and leads to stunting, wasting and undernourishment and causes children to be underweight or obese.

As the name suggests, being underweight refers to having a body weight too low to be considered healthy. Maintaining the right amount of weight is essential, as being underweight leads to a weakened immune system and causes you to feel tired and lethargic all the time. In extreme cases, simple actions such as standing up also causes more strain than the weakened body can handle.

India is the largest contributor of undernourished people in the world with around 194.4 Million people, or 14.37% of its population not receiving enough nutrition.

India has one of the worst rates of child malnutrition in the world, with one third of malnourished children globally being Indian. As per the Government of India’s National Family Health Survey 5 (NFHS 5), ‘Thirty-six percent of children under age five years are stunted; 19 percent are wasted; 32 percent are underweight; and 3 percent are overweight. Children born to mothers with no schooling and children in the lowest wealth quintile are most likely to be undernourished’.

Geographically, Maharashtra followed by Bihar and Gujarat have the worst levels of malnourishment in children in the country. Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Jharkhand have very high rates of undernutrition. Incidentally, these regions also have the highest population of children, and the highest poverty rates. Even states with the lowest percentage of undernutrition, such as Mizoram, Sikkim and Manipur have much higher malnutrition rates than developed nations.

In India, lots of socio-economic factors play a major hand in the malnourishment levels. In general, those who are poor are at risk for under-nutrition, while those who have high socio-economic status are relatively more likely to be over-nourished. Undernutrition is common in rural areas, mainly due to the low social and economic status of the inhabitants. Contrarily, in urban areas, overweight status and obesity are over three times as high as compared to rural areas.

OVERCOMING:-

Improved health care system

Various infections are prevalent in our society, which precipitate acute malnutrition among children and infants. These may include malaria, measles and diarrhea. A good health care system can go a long way in preventing malnutrition in the society, if it provides provides immunization, oral rehydration, early diagnosis, periodic deworming and proper treatment of common diseases.

People should be provided education on various topics like:

-Education on Nutrition

-Importance and nutritional quality of local and low cost foods.

-Nutritional quality of common foods.

-Importance of absolute breastfeeding for six months and continuing it up to two years or beyond.

-Damage caused by cultural practice of feeding

-Importance of immunizing children and following proper sanitation regularly.

-Nutrition supplementation

Welfare measures conducted by the government are to target biologically vulnerable groups like infants, pregnant women, preschool going and school going children. Micronutrients, calories, and proteins like iron, vitamin A and zinc can be supplemented.

ACTION BY HAMARI PAHCHAN IN ERADICATING MALNUTRITION:-

-Regular ration distribution drives

-Frequent surveys with dieticians

-Regular nutritious food distribution drive

Through their events and drives, HAMARI PAHCHAN have been able to conduct 5000+ food distribution drives and have been succesfull in educating underpreviliged about the proper nutrition to be given to the children. Hamari Pahchan has come up with an initiative to address this issue at the ground level. We have a dedicated team devoted to the hunger project, in order to make sure that no stomach goes to bed empty.
